The 2012 meeting at Wankhede, however, remains famous for the opposite reason: Mumbai were bowled out for 92.

A historical snapshot before the 2024 Wankhede fixture showed Mumbai with six wins from nine MI vs DC meetings at the venue.

Mumbai’s leadership era included Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Ricky Ponting and, most importantly, Rohit Sharma. Rohit became the central figure of Mumbai’s most successful IPL era and played a huge role in the team’s long-term success.

Delhi’s leadership has been more varied, including Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, JP Duminy, Zaheer Khan, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, David Warner and Axar Patel among the notable captains.

The official IPL match page confirms the recent sequence and shows that Delhi’s 2026 win came after Mumbai had won both meetings in 2025.

That pattern shows why recent form should not be confused with the overall historical record. Mumbai remain ahead across the complete rivalry, but Delhi have repeatedly produced periods of dominance.

Who Has the Better Record: Mumbai Indians or Delhi Capitals?

Based purely on the overall head-to-head record, Mumbai Indians have the better record.

MI have won 21 of the 38 meetings, giving them a win rate of approximately 55.3%. Delhi have won 17, giving them approximately 44.7%.

However, the numbers become more interesting when individual periods are examined.

Mumbai dominated 2010, 2011, 2017 and especially 2020. Delhi had strong seasons in 2009, 2012, 2018 and 2021. The two teams also split many seasons 1-1.

Mumbai’s greatest advantage has been their ability to dominate entire seasons. Their four victories against Delhi in 2020, including the final, are a perfect example.

Delhi’s biggest strength has been their ability to disrupt Mumbai’s momentum. Their nine-wicket win in 2013, their 146-run defeat in 2017 followed by other victories in later seasons, and their 2026 chase demonstrate that DC can produce match-winning performances even against a historically successful opponent.

So, if the question is who has the better overall MI vs DC record, the answer is Mumbai Indians. If the question is which team can dominate a particular season or match, the timeline shows that Delhi Capitals have repeatedly proved capable of turning the rivalry around.

Conclusion

The Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals timeline is a story of changing dominance rather than one-sided supremacy. From the first meetings in 2008 to the latest clash in 2026, the rivalry has repeatedly produced contrasting chapters.

Delhi started strongly in the early years, Mumbai responded with dominant campaigns in 2010 and 2011, Delhi swept the 2012 season, and the teams then traded victories across the following years. Mumbai’s 146-run demolition in 2017 remains one of the most memorable results in IPL history, while the 2020 season stands out as Mumbai’s ultimate statement, with four victories over Delhi including wins in Qualifier 1 and the final.

The rivalry changed again when Delhi emerged as a stronger contender around 2020-21. Recent seasons have continued to deliver close contests, including the 2024 run-fest, Mumbai’s two wins in 2025 and Delhi’s six-wicket victory in 2026.

With 21 wins for Mumbai Indians and 17 for Delhi Capitals after 38 meetings, MI still hold the historical advantage. But the narrow margin also explains why this fixture remains so attractive to IPL fans. Every new meeting adds another chapter to a rivalry built on big performances, dramatic results and constantly changing momentum.
